Re: OS X Lion and Localization

I have a Heidelberg Linotype Circon that cost me a fortune, connected by a RATOC FR1SX adapter. I've been trying out the dreaded Lion. My Silverfast AI 6.4.4 mostly works fine under Snow Leopard, but neither Silverfast (any version) or the adapter work under Lion.
I like to keep reasonably up-to-date with my OS, so staying with SL long-term is not an option I'd choose. I would very much like to hear from Silverfast if my scanner will ever be supported, as Heidelberg models are not listed in the scanners they propose to work on. I can't possibly afford to buy a new scanner of the same quality.

Any answers please?

Dear customer,

SilverFast 6 is nt compatible with OSX 10.7
Heidelberg high-end devices require greater care than other devices when adjusting them to this new operating system.
We will inform you on our website when SilverFast 8 will be available for these devices.
As these are professional machines our customers tend to leave functioning operating systems as they are.

kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn

I have the same problem, I installed the OS10.7 and now the silver fast is not working. Actually it is the only program that had this kind of problems.
Now I have a scanner that I've bought one year ago (canonscan 8800F) that is not working. I would like to know if silverfast SE 6.6 will have an update to lion?
I don't want/need new features, I only need an working scan software.
best regards.

Please check our site with information about SilverFast 8 and Lion support at: http://www.silverfast.com/show/sf8-scanners/en.html

Cheers

Version 6.5 and up would entitle you to a 50% disscount, just checked your scanner model and the cheapest software is the SE version which is 87 euros so half that. Most expensive is the Archive suite at 427 euros with 50% off but seeing you had it bundled you most likely have the SE version.

I bought mine within the free renewal period, I have registered but not heard anything.

Just to add to the general sense of indignity, I upgraded to 6.6 prior to June 1st, and now that Silverfast 8 is available, it's not available for my scanner. My scanner is just a few years old — an Epson Perfection 4180, and I feel no need to switch to a more recent device as it does a perfectly good job.

I've been in contact with the American branch of LaserSoft, and they've left me hanging; I've no idea when or if Silverfast 8 will be available for my scanner. They've not responded to my recent emails.

This situation really sucks. I've a backlog of work that needs to be attended to. While I don't regret the move to OS Lion in other respects, I really wish LaserSoft hadn't been so vague about all this. If there's an alternative scanning software on the market, that does a comparable job, I'd love to know about it. What I'm particularly pissed off about though is the obfuscation — if I could just get a direct answer out of the company (are they working on a 4180 version of SF8?), then perhaps I could move forward and shell-out for a new scanner and be done with it.

Not Happy.

Your Epson 4180 is more than "a few" years old. It was released in 2003, and was replaced by the 4490 in 2005.

If it does a perfectly good job, why not keep on rocking and rolling with Silverfast 6.6?

Silverfast 6.6 does not work in OSX 10.7 Lion.

Why should I have to go out and buy a new scanner when there's a software fix in here somewhere? I paid for, and updated to 6.6 this year, before transitioning to Lion. It's a little disingenuous of Lasersoft to be peddling updates to software that they must have known wasn't going to work in the next and imminent iteration of the Mac OS. It's like selling a used car, but knowing the wheels were about to fall off.

I feel I've been dealt with unfairly by Lasersoft.

This is correct!

We have never suggested you should replace your scanner. We are working on the implementation of the Epson 4180 with SilverFast 8.

Well, according to our system you bought your upgrade to version 6.6 in June 2010. If I am not wrong (correct me if I am please) that is almost a year an a half ago. By the time nobody (appart from apple engineers perhaps) knew the "new" operating system known today as lion.

Besides, we do have a grace period (Jun 2011-Dec 2011). Customers who purchased version 6.6 within the grace period are eligible for a free upgrade to version 8.

If everything goes well with the scanner implementation and testing, the scanner might be available around christmas time of this year (2011) or at the beginning of the next year (2012).

Kind regards

Thanks, Alejandro,

You are correct. I upgraded in 2010, my mistake. Apologies for the used-car salesman analogy. I've been a little frustrated as I haven't heard any news until now regarding an upgrade for the 4180.

Could you let me know when this is available? My frustration partly lies with Apple, it has to be said. After the upgrade to Lion on both my machines, it's been a litany of disasters. I should have checked more thoroughly before changing my OS.

Thank you.

Tim.

No problem, we are cool!

We are in the testing stages, there is not a hard release date just approximates. If everything goes right and no major issues arise, a new version should be available within the next two or three weeks.
We usually send emails to our customers when a new scanner model has been implemented and a SilverFast version is available for installation. You can suscribe to our newsletter and get informed as soon as your scanner is available.

Sorry to hear about that, I guess you are not alone, I have read of similar experiences on the net.

From my experience I can only recommend not to jump straight to a new OS until it is ripe. New O.S. usually come with new features but also with lots of new problems, early adopters are usually the ones who experience most problems.

On my personal machine I let my stable operating system working as is (with snow leopard).

Kind regards

That's great news, Alejandro.

Thank you so much. I'll be looking out for the email, and I'll upgrade ASAP.

Cheers!

Hi, I contacted you last year regarding an upgrade to Silverfast 8 on my Epson Perfection 4180 scanner. I was given the impression that it was in the "testing stages." That was in December of 2011. This year, I've been hobbling along, using inferior software. I'm quite frustrated, as you have made this upgrade available for my machine, but for PC users only. I am running OSX 10.8.2 Mountain Lion for Mac.

I really do not want to have to buy a new scanner (when my current scanner works perfectly) to do exactly the same job, simply because a Silverfast upgrade has been over a year in the waiting.

When? When are you going to do this?

Sincerely,

Tim

Dear Tim,

unfortunately there is no "TWAIN driver and EPSON Scan utility" for OS X 10.7 and 10.8. It is needed for SilverFast 8.
