Scanning B&W negatives with 48-bit colour

Hi there,
First time poster, long time reader. I'm J R, and I'm a photographer.
I'm scanning some B&W 6x7 negatives, and I'm looking to get the absolute best possible scans out of my Nikon LS9000. I am wet-mounting my film and using MultiScan. I'm wondering if there is any technical advantage of scanning B&W negs in 48-bit HDR colour, and later desaturating the file, as opposed to scanning directly to 16-bit HDR grayscale?
Thank you!
J R
