Analog Gain????

So I bought the Plustek 7200i with bundled silverfast 6.5 SE (what does that stand for, stupid edition?)
I cannot find the term "gain" or "analog" in the help files or anywhere in the program, let alone together. The scanner always underexposes the image and "corrects" using the post scan exposure controls, giving me what most only could be equated to dog barf with a bit depth equivalent to 6 and a half crayons in the hands of a two year old. May someone please inform me where the analog gain is hidden or if it's locked out in the stupid edition? I get annoyed at scanning programs that believe that the post exposure compensation is all you'll ever need. I have a nearly perfectly exposed slide that I can't scan for the world. It seems as if the analog gain is permanently set for negatives.
The red histogram looks like a train wreck at the bottom.
