Bitmapped scans

I just updated to Silverfast Version 8.2.0r3, build number: 13694. I am using mac OS 10.10.1 Yosemite on a Macbook Pro. The scans have bit-mapped sections in them. The areas of the slide that are bit-mapped are either very light or very dark, I tried AACO at different settings, with no change in image.

I have noticed other things as well. The scanned image file size is not near as big as what the software would indicate. For example, the attached scan was labeled as 9.1mb in Silverfast, but is 2.5mb in storage. Second, the scans seem to be taking a much shorter time to process than previously; this is not necessarily bad, except it seems some steps may be being missed. Other settings I am using: Photo Quality 300 ppi, Resolution 1800 ppi, isrd: no mask, USM: 100. 1. 0.

Thanks!

Dear customer,

Are you referring to the artefacts visible in your images?
These appear when a very dense emulsion blocks the infrared beam used for the hardware sided scratch and dust removal.
This is known to most likely occur with silver-halide B&W emulsions and very dense Kodachrome variants.
Try reducing the iSRD correction strength.

Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.

Thank you. That makes great sense. Without undoing the cardboard, I'm not sure what type of slide it is. They almost look like dupes - My mother-in-law brought them back from overseas, but I'm not sure it she took them or bought them.

Dear customer,

Kodachromes were often placed in cardboard.
You should try scanning them in Kodachrome mode and reduce the iSRD setting if necessary.

Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.
