If you have other requests concerning this issue in Mac os X.3, I have the solution, and it is as follows:

Navigate to Library/Image Capture/Devices, then remove the Epson Scanner plugin.

I did test this again with the update to Panther (10.3.1) and the workaround mentioned still works:
Have the "Epson Scanner" device removed from /Library/Image Capture/Devices and SilverFast is able to connect to your Epson 3200 scanner via firewire.

However, this shall no longer be necessary with the upcoming r6.
