scanning problem

(also posted on Mac OS page)

I have been having this problem on and off for a while, and it seems to stop with upgrades. The set-up is a Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro, Silverfast 6.6.0r2 on a Mac Pro (Intel) 10.4.11. See the attached image, it show the preview of what happens - the scanner does not actually finish, so I can't open one of the files.

I have not had this happen since I switched to this computer from an old Mac and upgraded Silverfast, but it came back again today after about 10 good scans. I've tried deleting preferences, repairing disk permissions, and reinitializing the scanner.

Any suggestions?

Dear erteel,
apart from a possible Software bug this looks like one of two reasons for this behaviour:

-1- Scanner Hardware Problem...
Do you have any chance of trying the original Software maybe on another machine ?

or

-2- Communication Problem:
Did you recently change cabling or (SCSI?) another Adapter ?
Can you try another configuration ( different cable or Firewire instead of SCSI ) ?
best regards,

I've experienced the same thing.

In User>Library>Preferences there is a temporary file, MFSLibInit, that needs to be trashed before you launch SilverFast. Also, I would suggest you restart Silverfast after each large scan.

I've found this does the trick. :D

Dear rbowman,
thank you for that hint.
Are you saying this file gets restored so the problem occurs again later ??
Do you have any idea who installs it ?

Greetings,

The file is in the Dimage Scan preferences folder, so I assume the Konica/Minolta driver for the scanner creates it. It is created each time SilverFast is launched, and deleting it after quitting SilverFast and before launching SilverFast again is the fix. I should clarify that I only use the SF Launcher, not the Photoshop plugin, and that I am running Mac OS X 10.5.5 (Leopard) on a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5. I had the same problem with OS X 10.4.X (Tiger), as did the original poster, and the image the OP included looks exactly like the result I used to get. I believe I learned about this on the Yahoo Multi Pro scanner group.

Unfortunately, those of us running these later versions of OS X are increasingly likely to experience problems because of incompatibilities. I would advise folks to run earlier releases of OS X that are known to work with SilverFast 6.4 and the Dimage Multi Pro scanner, perhaps on a separate FireWire drive.
