Automatic dust cleaning without losing details

Hi!
I want to suggest an automatic dust removing feature for your programs.

The idea is simple:
1) scan the same photo twice with rotating it, in scanner, by 180° second time, or simply with moving it a little (but rotation has some advantages);
2) align image contours of those two scans;
3) combine scans using darker pixels of two images.

This will eliminate white spots on scanned images caused by dust.
The result will look like this:
s1s.gif
s1s.gif (159.42 KiB) Viewed 1939 times

As you can see, almost all dust has vanished, without losing details.

Please note that image contours will not match in all areas, because of roughness of paper or irregularity of scanner's movements.
Therefore, they should be aligned in several areas independently.

If not simply shifted, but rotated upside down, this could also correct color halo around contours:

s2.gif (77.05 KiB) Viewed 1939 times

And it will fix glares on ragged photos:
s4.gif
s4.gif (254.16 KiB) Viewed 1939 times

All this without manual retouching. I guess it's useful. :)

Also please note that I have suggested this feature to other companies as well as to you.
And thanks for good programs.

Dear Vakons,

thank you for your suggestion.
Unfortunately it is not useful for us because only the dust at the glas will be removed by your system and it is necessary to move the picture.
But we are always happy about suggestions to make the scanning better.

Best regards,
Artur Möller

I see. :)
Maybe someone will make automatic images alignment one day – scanning 2-3 times is still much faster and simpler than cleaning all the dust manually.

Thanks, anyway!
