It's tough to think of anything to improve Silverfast, but maybe they could try to add some sort of noise reduction filter. I use an Epson Expression 1600, and the multi-pass scanning does a lot, but maybe more noise reduction could be incorporated via a software filter.

there seems to be quite noise free and the multi sample is 'EXTREME' useful in decreasing noise in neg mode(24X or 32X sampling maybe in future pls!). Good as it is in neg mode, but seems to blur things up noticeblely in slide mode...????I use 1X sampling in slide mode for sharpest cleanest results.
while the ice function is excellant for old pics, it seemed to create some very minor grit & shadows...???
dynamic range seems just adequate for negative film but not sufficient in slide mode(nikon Ls2000's 3.6D range limitations?)not sufficient details in darkest areas even at 48 bit hdr mode.
the icc profile is excellant, but how to judge if it's accurate in color rendition in both slide and neg mode?
could the exposure and focusing be improved?
finally, this is my greatest purchase!
would surely continue to download newer versions or well consider upgrade, super software that makes big miracles out of the scanner hardware!

We are currently working on a GRAIN REDUCTION FILTER for SilverFast Ai which will have a significant effect on certain kind of noise. The filter will be adjustable and the effect will be monitored in a special preview. Release can be expected within a couple of weeks.

That's great news!!! I sat around for a long time trying to think of anything that could possibly be improved! Can't wait to get the new version!

A couple a weeks? Time passes by....???
Any plans doing this noise reduction available for all scanners using SF AI? Any plans of making an update patch with this option for the SF 5.x or do you have to buy 5.5?

Time is still flying

I thought that I read on this forum that this would be shipped with version 6.x I just installed 6.x and can't find this anywhere. Is it there but I am looking in the wrong place (user error)? Anyone know?

It's called GANE, Grain And Noise Elimination. You should be able to find it in the Filter popup menu on the Frame panel.
