Hi,

I'm looking for a scanning app and am choosing between SilverFast and v**s**n.

I like SilverFast better (much better) however, I need to save as .dng RAW file as it is editable in Photoshop's RAW converter just like a camera file.

v**s**n has the option for saving as a .dng, so I have to use it for now.

Are you planning to add .dng saving in an upcoming version?

I know that the developer are talking about .dng, but I can not promise that it will be available, because you can work with .tiff-files like .dng-files and .tiff is a realy open format.

I'm still using the demo version but, I can't get a .tiff that will open in PS RAW Convert.

I can save as TIFF, JPG, PDF, JPEG2000 or EPSF

If I save as a .tiff it opens in PS normally, not in the RAW converter like a .dng, .nef or .crw.

How do I save a .tiff from SilverFast to open in the RAW converter?

All v**s**n is doing is placing a TIFF inside a DNG wrapper. This is similar to Nikon who offered the option to save scanned images as NEF.

If you insist on using DNG, you can always use Silverfast to scan your film, and then use the Adobe DNG Converter to wrap your TIFFs. But I've done the tests myself and saw no discernible difference in either the captured image data or in editing flexibility between a Silverfast TIFF and v**s**n DNG.

How about the ability to do parametric (reversible) editing of a DNG file in Camera Raw, with settings embedded in the file.

Can you do that with a TIFF?

PS: this is not a rhetorical question, I would be glad if anyone would answer this question.

I think I may have answered my own question: once you open a TIFF from Bridge into Camera Raw, it remembers to open it next time in Camera Raw and applies any changes you previously made to the image in Camera Raw.

Not sure if the Camera Raw parameters are saved in the TIFF or in a Bridge database, but if you double-click the file in Finder it opens in Preview without any corrections applied.

In any case, this could be the basis for having a TIFF file which preserves the original data but has Camera Raw adjustments applied parametrically, just as with a DNG.

However, DNG still may have the advantage of storing the Camera Raw edits internally to the file, and hence transportable, rather than in the Bridge database; I need to look into this further.
