Would it be possible to add a feature that would allow the scanner lamp to be switch off after a user-defined time? (And to start implementing this function on Polaroid scanners
)

no, this is not possible. It would require commands which doesn't exists.

This feature exists and is functional in Polaroid Polacolor Insight V5.0 for Polaroid SprintScan 4000 filmscanner.
So I guess it is possible with some scanners.

I have to apology here. The auto lamp off function does not work on my SS4000 because the command to turn it off does not exists in the firmware.
