I'd like a feature which allows the scanning parameters to be saved along with the scanned output file, either separately in a log file or as SilverFast-specific entries in the file's EXIF.

My concern is that I might find a great setting to scan the photo today. In the future, I decide I like the photo and want to scan it at a different resolution for a different project (possibly a poster or a professional output job). Unfortunately, I might not be able to reattain the same quality or 'style' or 'feel' because I don't know which parameters were originally used.

That's an interesting idea, I have to scan most pictures twice, for example I might have to scan 100 pictures at lo-resolution for a client to make a selection from, and then say 50 or so are selected to be scanned at hi-res. This would be a really useful feature for me.

This can already be done (for the most part). If you open SF and on the main palette, under <b>General</b> tab there is an option to "Save" the Frame-Set. Click on it to save the selected frame(s) that you have selected in the scan window. Under the <b>Frame</b> tab, you will notice "Save" next to the word Settings. Saving here will once save all of your levels, curves, NegaFix, etc. settings.

I just save both under the same name in each tab if I want to go back to the identical settings. As for it being more work to save it in 2 places, I'm sure you'll find that you rarely save the frameset, but will likely save the settings quite often.

I've known about the Frame-Sets and Settings (and their limitations) for quite some time.


I'd still like to see SilverFast either;

1. be able to export the current settings to a user-defined location, possibly in xml format

2. be able to write the current settings to a Comments field within the saved file. We would be able to view those comments within most graphics programs and there are even one or two shareware applications that deal explicitly with EXIF and Comment fields. I suggest the Comments field because it is available to most graphics applications, but SilverFast-specific EXIF fields would work too if the EXIF specification allows for that.

I used the various auto functions to process the same 48-bit RAW tiff file three times last night and saw slightly different results each time. It might have been the order in which I pressed the buttons or it might have been something else. I can't be sure though because there is no easy way for me to see the final settings used to process the file.

How about an optional 'Advanced' dialog which lists all of the current parameters in editable fields. A button on the dialog would copy the parameters in text format to the clipboard for the user to store anywhere they wish. How's that sound?

The parameters of all frames and the option dialog (with default settings) can be saved in a text file. You can find the "Output Statistic" button in the expert dialog (the most right button in the tools line under the logo).
