Firewire for Linotype

I have a Linotype 2650 SCSI/Firewire scanner.
I've downloaded SilverFast 6 but it can't find my scanner which is connected by Firewire.
I've asked technical support if there are any plans for Firewire support for Linotype scanners? The reply was;

No, because we cannot get any information concerning device drivers from the manufacturer (discontinued by manufacturer).
With SCSI devices we do not need drivers or much information from the manufacturer, and this is why the status is SCSI=yes and USB / FW = no.

Is that really the end? Will I need to get a SCSI card installed in my Mac when I upgrade to OS X? :cry:

I've just read the recent post from ric where he says;

have been trying out Silverfast with my 1450 firewire in OSX[quote]

Does this mean that you can now get information concerning device drivers from the manufacturer? If so, will I be able to use my 2650 firewire?

SilverFast Ai Linotype 2650 FireWire will be supported

We are waiting to get the technical infos required to properly support FireWire for the 2650. So you can be sure FireWire will be supported for that scanner.

I'm still waiting for Firewire support for the Linoscan 2650. In the meantime I read the following post:

viewtopic.php?t=2438

A guy there (Beige) is using his Umax 2100XL (SCSI support only) through a Belkin F5U541 FireWire to SCSI adapter.

Can anyone confirm whether the 2650 will work in this way (in 10.3 Panther) before I buy a Belkin adapter.

Many thanks.

Dear Users.

We performed an internal test with the Linoscan 2650 and the Belkin Firewire to SCSI converter but the result is not stable enough to be used in a production environment. The scanner works stable with the following setup:
Mac 10.3.1 - SF 6.2.0r2 - SCSI - Adaptec 2930 - SCSI ID: 2

As soon as Heidelberg can provide us with command sets for Firewire support we will include firewire into SilverFast Ai for the Linoscan 2650.

Kind regards.

Firewire to SCSI adapter with Silverfast

The last Firewire note was written in 2004. Can we use Silverfast Ai now with a Firewire to SCSI adapter? www.ratocsystems.com claims to have a converter that should work but suggests using Hamrick's v**s**n 8. I don't really want to give up Silverfast Ai if I don't have to.

Dear mjf,

which LinoType Scanner specifically is ti that you'd like to use through the Ratoc ?

We have several reports of Lino Scanners working with the Ratoc but it really depends on the Scanner / configuration...

My scanner is Heidelberg's Opal Ultra. My computer is iMac Intel Care 2 Duo. I could connect either with Firewire or USB, whichever might be better.

Dear mjf,

we did not try out that combination,
where are you located, maybe it is possible to lend you a Ratoc to give it a try !
