Canon 8400F and Windows 7 64-bit

Hello,

A question I am unable to have answered elsewhere: I have a Canon 8400F that I use infrequently with my Windows 7 64-bit PC. Although the drivers are occasionally flakey, it works well in this environment, scanning through Scangear and Photoshop CS4.

I have heard about Silverfast and am looking to trial it to see if I can get improved colour quality in my scanning.

I notice however, that a Silverfast application is only available for 32bit versions of Windows... unlike newer Canon scanners which have 64bit versions available.

Is there a technical limitation preventing a 64 bit version for the 8400F being produced? The Canon supplied drivers do otherwise work identically to the 32bit versions.

Please note - installing a 32bit version of Windows is not an option in my environment - I am running a computer with 6GB of RAM.

Dear jkoziol,

SilverFast can operate in 64bit Windows Systems.
It does not matter if a Program is using 32bit code this has no influence on Windows capability to handle more than 4GB memory.

Unfortunately the structure of the current Canon 8400 drivers does not allow access in 64bit systems.
Therefor we can currently not offer support for this scanner in Windows 64 bit systems.
The compatibility page for your scanner contains an RSS feed which can inform you as soon as this changes.

Hello,

Canon has already released the 64 bit drivers: ScanGear CS 10.231a (Windows 7 x64/Vista x64/XP x64).
Will an update for SF be available? I noticed that the 8600F and other canon scanners are already compatible with 64 bit OS.

Best regards

Why do you say that my previous post doesn't fit into this discussion? I'm referring exactly to Canon 8400F and Windows 64 bit!

As I said before, Canon has already released 64 bit driver for the Canon 8400F (driver name: ScanGear CS 10.231a; filename: 8400fvst6410231a_64it.exe).
So how about Silverfast support for this scanner with 64 bit operating systems?!?

Best regards

Yes, we are aware Canon has posted 64 bits drivers for your scanner as well as for other canon scanner models. Unfortunately those drivers are missing a specific library required by SilverFast to operate your scanner properly, hence the scanner is not officially supported under Windows 64 bits operating system.

Thank you for your patience and understanding
