Error in Scan Start. Scanner not ready.

Have a Canon FB1200S flatbed scanner, Mac OS X 10.2.6 'Jaguar,' Apple PowerMac 8600 + Sonnet G3/500MHz upgrade CPU daughtercard.

I am experiencing a sequence of errors that ultimately prevent a sucessful scan of any kind. The errors I receive depend upon the state of the Canon FB1200S scanner at the time of selecting a scan command within the SilverFast interface.

If the Canon scanner is 'asleep' (e.g. the lamp is not on), when I click 'Prescan' I get the error, 'Error in Scan Start. Scanner not ready.' However, as soon as I do this, the lamp comes on (which implies to me that some communication between the software and the scanner hardware is at least occurring).

If the Canon scanner is 'awake' (e.g. the lamp is on), when I click 'Prescan,' the scanner's lamp begins to blink in regular cycles of about 4 seconds (but never moves; still another indication that at least some communication is happening between the software and the scanner), and I get a progress window that says, "RGB: preparing scan...' with one button named 'Cancel,' however, this button is 'greyed out' and cannot be pressed. The progress bar remains at 0% (no progress). This goes on indefinitely. In fact, even if I force Photoshop/SilverFast to quit, I cannot successfully shut down my Macintosh until I have removed power from the scanner and the scanner's lamp also continues to blink indefinitely until the computer has been rebooted.

My scanner is successfully located in the 'Device:' drop-down list of the 'General' tab of the main SilverFast window, and also when I select 'Search devices'; it is reported as 'SCSI CanoScan.' Also, Apple System Profiler reports finding my scanner as 'IOSCSIParallelDevice,' 'SCSI Target 2,' 'SCSI lun 0.'

Lastly, be advised that this scanner works perfectly in OS 9 with Canon's provided drivers and software.

It seems like all the ingredients are in place for it to work, but it still doesn't. I really need an OS X solution for this scanner, and was hoping to buy your software. If you can make this work, you will have a paying customer here for sure.

Many thanks for any assistance,

-Mitch Bray

Dear Mitch,
SCSI sometimes breaks every rule. We made the experience that changing the SCSI ID at the scanner (when switched off) will cure problems that you had before.
