Recently lost ability to adjust curves

I've been using SF Ai or Ai Studio to scan color negative film for several years now with my Epson Perfection 4980... most recently within the Windows 7 - 64 bit environment. I conscientiously update my software and drivers. I recently installed (and ultimately uninstalled) the Ai Studio demo version for a Nikon 8000 ED, which did not work out for me.
I've always been able to make adjustments using the various tools accessed on the upper section of scan/options panel.
Recently I have been unable to use the Gradation Curves tool without creating pronounced solarization. ANY movement of the sliders, manipulation of ANY of the control points, or manual input of the various input fields within the Gradation Curves panel, or alteration of the Exposure, Brightness (Midtone) or Contrast sliders within the Picture Settings panel, suddenly shifts the lower 3 control points of the Gradation Curve up above 128. (User defined adjustments within the Image Type drop-down list or within the Expert Dialogue panel are possible without solarization however). Another artifact of this problem shows itself as the lower 3 control points within the Gradation Curve panel being displayed as open circles instead of the solid black dots like the rest of the control points. These open circle control points are not movable with the mouse curser as the other control points are.
I suspect that I have a corrupted preference file, but I'm at a loss as to what to do. I've reinstalled the software to no avail.
Do you have any suggestions?
