Saving the modified scan

Sorry to be so clueless but I am doing my first scans ever of Kodak file negatives using Silverfast 6.6 and an Plustek OpticFilm 7300. I have selected Negatives but otherwise kept the software defaults.
My first day method has been to select "Prescan" to get the image (which comes in fine), make all necessary modifications (color, cropping, dust and scratch removal, etc), then select "Scan" to save the corrected image. Is this the proper procedure? I cannot find a"Save" button and I'm afraid I might be starting over with the original image when I hit "Scan".
Is there no "Save" button?
And why prescan at all? Why not go directly to Scan, then modify the image, then Save (or hit Scan again if this is how to save the modified image).
I've plowed through six chapters of the software manual and many helpful tutorials but the information is all very specific ally related to various cool functions and features.
I found and used the Scan Pilot to help me sequence my modifications, but cannot find anywhere a "Getting Started" tutorial. I'd appreciate a "Getting started" link and/or clarification onhow to save modified images.
