Failure to create readable scan files at 4000 dpi with Ai 6
PostPosted: Fri Jan 09, 2009 1:05 am
Summary -
Scans are successful at all resolutions below 4000 dpi, but fail at 4000 dpi.
Details -
When using Silverfast in the non-Twain (free standing) mode to scan 6x7 positive transparencies at 4000 dpi, 48 bit color, with or without SRD or Digital ICE turned on or off, the file will not open in Adobe Photoshop in the normal automatic mode. Instead, I get an error message --
"Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of file was encountered."
The *.TIF file that is created and saved is about 9 MB, not the expected 500+ MB. The 9MB file gives a grey streak preview in Photoshop if I try to open it from the saved file, but Photoshop returns the same error message if iI try to proceed further to open the grey streaked preview file.
At various resolutions from 2000 dpi up to 3200, 3400 or 3800 dpi, the scan is completed successfully, and the expected file sizes up to, for example, 524,455,566 Bytes are generated, saved, and opened in Photoshop. At 4000 dpi and, as an a experiment, 4200 dpi, the process fails and returns very small files.
The above problem occurs on two versions of Silverfast Ai, for two different scanners, on the same computer.
In each case, the manufacturer's own brand of software does not cause the problem. The problem did not occur in the past with the registered copy of Silverfast on the Microtek Artixscan 120TF. After it occurred on the Artixscan, I downloaded the latest Ai-Studio for my brand new Nikon Coolscan 9000ED (while awaiting the arrival of the Ai-Studio that I have purchased on CD.). The same problem occurs with this set of components.
Do not work -
Silverfast Ai-6 on Microtek Artixscan 120TF. SF version 6.4.5r4b, registered copy.
Silverfast Ai-Studio on new Nikon Coolscan 9000ED, downloaded demo 6.6.0r4c.
Do work OK -
Microtek Scan Wizard Pro TX vers. 7 works OK at 4000 dpi, 48 bit, on the Artixscan120TF
and Nikon Scan 4 works OK at 4000 dpi, 48 bit on the Col scan 9000ED.
Files generated are the expected size - about 570 to 580 MB.
Computer is an HP XW-8000 work station, running WinXP-Pro SP2. 4 GB RAM, dual Pentium Xeon CPU's.
Lots of free disc space on all hard drives.
Only one scanner is connected to the computer at any time; both use the same IEEE1394 port on a SIIG PCI card; I unplug the cable for one and plug in the cable for the other. There are several FireWire HD's, but all other peripherals are USB.
I have deleted the PREFS file in the \Application Data \ Lasersoft Imaging \Silverfast directory in Documents and Settings. Upon re-starting Silverfast, the PREFS files regenerated, although there are many fewer than before. After regenerating the PREFs folder, the problem still exists.
Before I try out these software and hardware combinations on another computer, I though that you might recognize the problem. Do you have any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Fred Osterholtz
