Batch Crashing

I have had different versions of SilverFast for years and been very happy with the software but for many releases now it has become unusable in batch mode. Basically it starts the batch, succeeds for the first image 100% of the time then there is a minor delay (about 4 secs) and then it starts the next. Somewhere in the the next few scans it crashes Photoshop. Occationally it will lose contact with the scanner instead of crashing photoshop. In this situation you are dropped back in Photoshop but when trying to save the scanned photos it will usually crash Photoshop at this stage.
I use Photoshop CS3 on Windows Vista where it runs without problem outside of its relationship with Silverfast. I am now using the latest and greatest version of Silverfast (Ai ME 6.5.5r5). Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Please note: it does seem to work with the standalone program but I DEFINITELY would prefer running it from within Photoshop.
