IT8 calibration marquee askew

I'm trying to calibrate a flatbed scanner with SilverFast Ai 6.5.5r4 and Kodak Q60 targets, and having some frustrating issues with the transparency calibration.
Firstly, when I click the IT8 button in SF, it "initializes" the scanner (which sounds like a prescan of the entire bed judging by the noise it makes) about two times, can't find the barcode (obviously), and asks me to locate the reference file. So I pick the reference file I downloaded for the target, and it does what seems like ANOTHER prescan, and then says that color patch sampling was unacceptable, and to "cancel and correct the frame placement."
Now, I've learned not to cancel, because that just initializes AGAIN and prescans AGAIN and then drops me back out of the IT8 tool, albeit with a 30° rotated frame and all my frame settings reset to defaults. :(
So the next time, instead of cancelling, I tried to drag the marquee corners into place, but am completely unable to reach the top two corners due to the marquee being rotated about 30° and half off the edge of the preview window. I can't select and drag the entire marquee as I've been able to do in the past, so I have no choice but to cancel. And you know where that leads. :(
Help?
My scanner is a Microtek ScanMaker 1000XL (with TMA1000XL Transparent Media Adapter). I'm using a template to align the target, as instructed in the manual.
Thanks. :)
