LaserSoft Imaging

Under MacOS 10.4.4 I had so far no problems with SilverFast (two scanner Epson and Nikon). But since the version 6.4.3xx Silverfast accepts no more names in the field ?name?, which have more than 26 characters. Up to the version 6.4.2xx there was no limitation here. Knows someone why this was modified? From Lasersoft I do not receive any response despite repeated inquiries in addition.

I just did a test and found that I was able to enter more than 26 characters in the file name field. (The test was done with SilverFast AI Studio version 6.4.3r8)

I am surprised. Using SilverFast 6.4.3r8 with an Epson Perfection 4870 Photo and 6.4.3r6 with a Nikon Coolscan IV I am not able to enter more than 26 characters in the field "name".
And once again: In version 6.4.2xxx there was no limitation.

How many characters can you enter and what is the hardware you are using with SilverFast ?

I am using SilverFast AI Studio 6.4.3r8 with an Epson 4990 on a Windows XP system.

In my test I was able to enter the alphabet twice separated by an underscore.

Now I have an answer of LaserSoft:

"First of all it is correct that it behaves as described. This
modification had which background, I know unfortunately only in
approximately - the modification was connected with altogether a
variable concept necessarily amended for a subrange program. To that
extent with the current SilverFast generation "a return to the status
quo" could not be made."

For MacOS is it as I described: Only 26 characters in "name" since version 6.4.3xx. Windows users could be happy that they are not concerned with this change.

I am curious to see an example of a file name you would use requiring more than 26 characters. I tend to stick with the 8.3 naming convention and then use other things like IPTC or EXIF for detailed descriptors. Maybe your way of naming files is more efficient, so please do share.

I am used to do in the file name of my photos the place and what I have made the photo from. So the file name has up to 50 characters somtimes. In this case I can sort them and have a good overview. And I give the file his name directly in SilverFast.

Naturally when I give photos outside of my own system (to an agency or when I sell it) then I rename the photo and insert correct IPTC-informations.

Do you take them all with a film camera and then scan them or do you also use a digital camera?

Have you considered adding photo management software to your workflow? There are applications (i.e. New ACDsee 8 Pro) that allow you to batch rename and effectively keep a data base of all your pictures. You are able to establish categories, keywords etc. for the data base as well as both EXIF and IPTC.

the photos were all taken as slides and then scanned (all with Nikon equipment). Normaly I sell them over agencies worldwide (in USA with jupiterimages).

In the field of photo management I work with iView Media Pro and I do all that you told me. But I am used to my long names !
