Some output printer profliles unvailable in CMS. Why?

I'm running Silverfast 6.4.3r6b and print with a RIP made by Colorbyte Software called "ImagePrint." None of their output printer profiles show up on the list of available profiles in the SilverFast CMS, while all of the profiles provided by my printer manufacturer (Epson) show up. ImagePrint profiles do show up in Photoshop (CS) and can be selected as the RGB color space or for soft proofing. This means I can't scan in the same color space as the destination printer--making lots of extra work, post scan. What's wrong with either SilverFast, or the profiles that seem to make them incompatible with SilverFast?

ImagePrint printer/paper profiles are freely available for download at their website colorbytesoftware.com

Der mahlonfcraft,

thanks for the info. I downloaded a couple of profiles from their website and I couldn?t even open them with ColorSync. Even ColorThink crashed on me when trying to open the profile.

Could you please provide me with some additional information fur further forum troubleshooting or just send ean Email to support@silverfast.com and we will open a ticket.

Best,

JAN

Coloybyte Software, makers of the ImagePrint RIP, reports that their profiles are not fully compatible with SilverFast, due to missing tags, etc. In my own tests, ColorSync reported all ImagePrint profiles as bad. Therefore anyone using SilverFast for image scanning will not be able to use Colorbyte profiles in the output printer area of the CMS.

Dear All,

pls let me kindly add that scanning directly into any printers profile is not considered as a media-neutral workflow. The scanner is capable of producing a lot more gamut and dynamic than any available printer is able to reproduce. Scanning directly into any output devices characteristics will limit your scan aka input device exactly to the characteristics of the output device.
In other words. If you do not intend to use the scanned image for just one purpose, to be printed with one printer, paper and ink combo, than I recommend to scan into a larger working space like AdobeRGB or eciRGB (www.eci.org). The advantages are (among others) larger color space and being able to convert to any designated output space. In other words, if someday you will be able to output on a device with a larger gamut, due to an optimized printer, ink and paper combo, no rescanning needs to be done since the image is preserved in a larger working space. In this case the conversion to the printer profile will take place at the time of printing, not at the time of scanning.

Best,

Jan
