Cannot view TIF thumbnail in Win Explorer with Ep 4870 &

I have an Epson Perfection 4870 scanner and Silverfast Ai version 6.4.2r2. I had no problems when using SE Plus. With Ai, when I scan a black & white photo print at 1200 dpi with 16>8 bit grayscale, the scanned TIF image appears fine in Silverfast, but when I go to Windows Explorer, the thumbnail is completely gray with no perceptible image. If I open the file in Photoshop 7, it is fine. If I scan the same photo and save in jpg, the thumbnail in Windows Explorer is ok. It's only when I save to TIF that I get a completely grayed out thumbnail. I also get a MS message saying "Microsoft Office Document Imaging does not support this type of TIFF file". I am using Windows XP Pro. Again, I did not have this problem when using SE Plus. Anyone have any ideas?

Dear jam2000ws6

please try if deactivating HiRePP (> Options > Special) does produce TIFFs that don't show that problem.

Inability to view scanned TIF files in Win Expl using Ai6

Dear Sonny,
I de-activated (unchecked) the HiRePP option and it did not make any difference. The problem is still not resolved as the Windows Explorer view is just a gray surface with no image.

Dear jam2000ws6

I take it that you'd rescanned the images (with deactivated HiRePP)?
Sorry to ask, just wanted to make sure. Thanks for your kind understanding :)

Dear Sonny,
Yes, I re-scanned a half dozen images AFTER disabling HiRePP with the same result as before, a completely grayed-out image in Windows Explorer. The image looks good in Silverfast Ai6 and in Photoshop 7, but no discernable image shows in Windows Explorer thumbnail view.

Hope you can help,

John McInally
