Hi I bought a second hand Nikon LS1000 and also a copy of Lasersoft 4 as part of the bundle.

I am climbing up the learning curve very quickly.

However, I've learnt to manipulate the histogram and curve in the scanner software rather than in my imaging software. paint shop pro. I have noticed that when i set the black and white points etc and then scan the image when I open the file in paint shop the change in the black and white points have not changed at all. I can tell this from the histogram which still has space at top and bottom of the x values.

When I installed the software on my machine there was no problem I can use the functionality in the preview window, it just doesnt seem to have any effect in final scanned version. I also notice when I look at the info section it appears to say that I am using a demo versions. is this correct.

Hope you can help me.

Dear Martin,

Are you using SilverFast 4? or version 6?

What you see in the preview should look the same as your final scan? At least approximatively when the scanner is not calibrated.

Be also aware that the histogram you see in SilverFast is the "input" histogram before any correction has been applied. Only the black and white points are indicated as triangles under the histogram. The "output" histogram can be visualized by pressing the "ALT" key.

Hi Thomas

Im using Version 4.

Ive sorted out the problem with the scanned image not showing any change. I have been able to successfully manipulate the black and white points etc. and the output now has clearly been manipulated.

The only problem now is that the scanned image as displayed on my pc is much brighter than the scanned image as shown in the pre-scan image although the colours look pretty good although not perfect. If I apply a gamme adjustment of 80% then the lightness pretty much matches

I was thinking about calibrating my scanner but I guess I need to buy a target and get the next version up????

Thanks for you help Martin

Further to my earlier post. I have solved the problem as follows. I got this solution from a UK based photo printing house.

1 Get a good test image
2 Put the image as your desktop using wall paper etc
3 Make sure you have set up your monitor properly. I found the best place for advice on how to do this here
4 Open the same image in your image processing software, in my case paintshop pro
5 Adjust settings to get the two images to be the same. In my case I turned off colour management in PSP. (I reckoned it was adjusting for my printer)
6 Now find out if the colour rendition matches the physical test print from your preferred printing co. Of course if you want to print with your own printer then I think I would be using the colour management of the pc which is meant to help with the rendition of colours on your screen in same way as is seen on the printed output.

Thomas does this make sense to you.

Also if I want to profile my scanner using IT8 how can I do this and which version of Silverfast do I need?
