LaserSoft Imaging

I use a UMAX PowerLook 3000 with the software silverfast ai 5 and I would like to know how to scan a negative. i tried it a few times but there was no satisfactory result in the end? The colors were too dark or looked too pale. Can anyone describe me the steps I have to follow??
