I down loaded the trial software to see if I would get good 35mm scans with my Canon 9000f mk ii

The good news is that the trial scan came out great, using default settings, nice and exposed, sharp detail - miles better than the dark scan from the packed in CanoScan software.

I went and purchased the software and did the scan again.

The Silverfast scan then came out terrible, just as dark and bad as the CanoScan scan.

I've tried tweaking all the options but can't get it anywhere near what the trial software produced.

In addition the settings have been reduced now as well, removing the option for a high quality preview. Why would this simple option not be Included in the SE version ?

Please check if you might have selected one of the HDR(i) RAW archive formats. These would be saved unprocessed at an gamma of 1.0 and seem very dark.

Make sure you set the red scan frame tightly around the image so no unexposed material can disturb the histogram.
Also check the Histogram if you might have to set the shadows and highlights.
You can do this manually in the histogram by moving the arrows below the curve or try using the Auto button next to the Histogram button.
When you click and hold the Auto button you gain access to various auto correction methods.
