Scan dimensions

I am scanning slides in Ai Sudio for editing in HDR and want to do it at the right resolution to get the best image to use in Lightroom.
Ai Studio
Setting bit depth to 64 bit HDRi
Scan Dimensions:
Do I ignore the scan dimensions field?
Preset: Mark Segal in his book (page 122) says set this and ignore the Res field below (which should be just for information), but the two fields seem to be independent.
A lot of the time when I am trying to set Preset at 2,000 or 4,000 ppi or just changes it to 200 or 400
I understand the colours in the Res slider are warnings as to whether one is approaching the limits of the optical resolution of one's scanner (I am using a Nikon 5000 ED)
- with the slider on 2000ppi it is just in yellow
- with the slider at 4000 it is just in orange
I can't see much difference between the output of 2000ppi and 4000 ppi.
What should I set in both Preset and Res fields?

HDR Studio
Setting bit depth to 48 bit
Should I set the Preset and Res fields the same as processed in Ai Studio?
Sometimes when having done batch processing, despite having copied the resolution across to the other slides in the batch at 4000 ppi when I look at the results (although they are all about the same size the other slides are showing as at 300ppi rather than 4000ppi.

Dear customer,

The Resolution slider shows the actual resolution being used by the scanner.
The Preset is the display/print base resolution. It can be used together with the Output size in the Expert settings (gear wheel icon) to calculate a certain output size.
The Preset is also placed in the files metadata. So when loading a file into another software this is used for the showing the image. It is not actually the resolution used for scanning.

Kind regards,

Many thanks

Ai Studio
If I understand correctly I should, if scanning slides for editing in HDR Studio, ignore the Preset fields and use the Res slider.

Based on that if the colours in the Res slider are warnings as to whether one is approaching the limits of the optical resolution of one's scanner (I am using a Nikon 5000 ED) and
- with the slider on 2000ppi it is just in yellow
- with the slider at 4000 it is just in orange
Should I use set at 2000ppi (I can't see much difference between the output of 2000ppi and 4000 ppi)?

HDR Studio
If I have scanned at bit depth to 64 bit HDRi in Ai Studio, should I edit with a bit depth setting of 48 bit?

What should I set the Preset and Res fields, do I again ignore the Preset fields and set the Res slider with the same setting as used in Ai Studio?

Regards
Peter

Dear Peter,

The best resolution mainly depends on your individual images.
If you are not sure scan two images at 2000 and 4000 ppi and compare them in 100% view.
Check if you gain any additional details by scanning in 4000 ppi.

SilverFast HDR Studio will always process your images in 48 bit.
The question is if you want to save them in 48 or 24 bit.
This mainly depends on the intended use.
Only 24 bit images can be saved in JPG or example. This also is the common bit depth you will find in most images. 24 bit images are also the most compatible ones.
Saving 48 bit files would be used for further processing in other professional imaging software that can handle 48 bit files (not every software can do so).
There is also no visible difference between a 48 or 24 bit file as only very few devices can display more than 24 bit color depth.

Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.

Arne

Many thanks.

Should I worry about the colours in the Res slider in Ai Studio
- with the slider on 2000ppi it is just in yellow
- with the slider at 4000 it is just in orange

In HDR Studio should I ignore the Preset fields and set the Res slider with the same setting as used in Ai Studio?

Dear Peter,

Yes the colors are only indicators, you can of cause use the resolutions.

You only need to adjust the resolution values in HDR Studio in case you want to rescale an image.
