File naming - a request?

(sorry, the third time today, but I will stop after this and wait for some answers)
I have tried many things, and read through the forum (searched for "naming") and it seems that the one capability that I (and it seems others) consider essential is better naming facilities. To wit: I scan my negatives in HDR (or HDRi if colour) in SF Ai and process them in SF HDR. This involves flipping some of them, for example. Then I would like to BATCH process them and save them to another directory (typically a subdirectory called "Processed"). Ideally, they would keep their names with a minor change (chosen by me), for example, 0973-33.tif would become 0973-33p.tif. This does not seem possible, and, as others have asked, I would like to join my voice the request to have the ability to use wildcards or % etc. And I would prefer (I don't know about others) to have the default name suggested as the current name (2), as it is when processing individual images.
At the very least, I would like to see the naming conventions clearly explained in a pdf document (possibly accessible from the batch scanning pdf that exists).
I just spent an hour renaming files because I assumed, stupidly, that if the files were scanned in the order in which they are named (xxx-1, xxx-2 ...) and then all processed, the numbering would remain the same. Not so. They are renumbered, it seems in bunches of 6, but I cannot see the logic behind it. It seems (?) somehow similar to the problem described in an earlier post, that of flipping all images processed if one is.
(sorry, the mathematician in me just needs to understand)
Or am I doing something wrong?
