Choosing directory in VLT (HDR 8.5)

I am back. I have, I think, an answer to one of my questions posted five minutes ago. But it leads to something else.
I asked why SF HDR gobbles up all my CPU and memory. It seem that it is looking for photo files so it can display them in VLT. Is that correct?
Still, it looks in My Pictures and on the drive containing it. Is there a way to set the default drive/directory BEFORE opening VLT? And to prevent automatic prescanning when SF HDR opens so that one can choose where to go first?
Thanks
