strange "puzzle"-like images when scanning bw-films

Postby SHX » Wed Sep 23, 2015 6:06 am

Hello

My name is Steffen and I am new to scanning negatives. I boucht an Epson V800 and SilverFast Ai Studio recently and also two books which I consulted regarding my problem.

When I scan colour films, like Agfa XR 100 i or Kodak Gold 100 the results look like what you'd expect. But all my attemtps to scan a blabk-and-white film (Ilford FP4) resulted in a strange image, looking like artwork or a puzzle but it is impossible to recognize anything. The prescan (20%) as well as the film itself (of course) look normal. The 20% prescan shows a normal picture with all the details. In the attached example the image shows a group of people.

My parameters:

NegaFix: Ilford FP4 Plus
scan resolution: 4800 ppi
saved resolution: 600 ppi
colour depth settings: 48>24 / 16 / 16>8

Since I assumed the 16>8 (my first setting) conversion might be the problem I changed this setting but the result keeps looking the same.

I attached the picture of a group of people. I scanned to a TIFF file which is between 95 and 31 MB in size. To be able to attach the file I reduced the size and converted it to JPG using Potoshop Elements 13. It looks (exactly) like the original file.

Regarding the software the result is indipentend. I tried to view the files with the windows built in viewer, Photoshop Elements 3 and Photoshop Extended (CS6) immediately after scanning (no reding by other viewers) but all the pictures on all the films look like this.

Since I have really a lot of B/W films I need your assistance.

Have a great day!

Steffen

p.s. May I make a comment? A maximum size of 256 kb for attachments is very small for a forum discussing digital images.

Dear Steffen,

Please deactivate the infrared scratch and dust removal (iSRD).
infrared correction can not be used with most B&W film material.

Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.
