i use Silverfast 8 SE Plus with a Canon 8800F.

I'm in the process of photo paper calibration using "Selective Color Calibration" and
cannot find any way to calibrate a gray scale, but only colors.

is there a way to do a gray scale calibration with this Silverfast ?

A calibration is always a color calibration.
Scanners are always RGB devices and a color calibration therefor is also valid for scanning gray scale images.
A gray scale calibration is not necessary or possible.

I'm a new user; It took so long for my post to get answered that i eventually found what i was looking for:
it's called Global Color Correction.

I scan a reflective stepped gray scale (Kodak or Gretag) and then adjust the gray tones for low/med/high lights until
they're exactly the same as the original.

My understanding is that in order to get good colors, one has first to calibrate gray.

If you make a test by putting 10-15 clicks towards the green in GCC, you will see all the resulting
colors gone towards the green side, and even using Auto CCR will not bring back the right colors
in the scan.
When doing manual calibration, gray MUST be calibrated first; colors come second.
This is the reason the IT8 charts have a gray scale.
Of course, the monitor must be calibrated first, otherwise, any calibration is only a waste of time.
