Cannot 'see' the negative

I'm using SilverFast AI v 6.6 on my Mac (OSX 10.4.10) and a Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL with the TMA1600 'lid' for scanning transparencies. I've been trying to scan in some old negative transparencies all morning using NegaFix. When I use Overview or PreScan, all I get is a scratchy window with a white area which is the same shape as the slide holder supplied by Microtek. I've tried all the buttons, all the CMS options, everything. Cannot see the picture although if I hold it up to the light, it's there ... I must be doing something wrong but what? Thanks to anyone who can help me.

dear ann.farr
Did you activate the transparency unit by selecting the transparency option in the main window in SilverFast?
Also please make sure that the cable connecting the transparency unit with the main unit is correctly plugged, if necessary, please close SilverFast then turn your scanner off, and disconnect and reconnect the mentioned cable.
Then start your scanner again, once the scanner is ready for operation (the lights in the front panel should not blink), you can start SilverFast again and try this time the transparency option and then activating the NegaFix window.
