Hi,

I've got a Nikon Coolscan V ED and Silverfast Ai.
I want to scan my old pictures from negatives. But all scans with Silverfast are a bit greener or greenbluer than they sholud be!

With the Nikon Scan SW the colors are OK. But I want to scan with Silverfast because the quality seems to be much better with Multi-Sampling enabled.

The negatives are mostly from Fuji (G-100, 616, HG400,....), but even with Fuji selected in the negafix dialog, the resultas are not better.

Any solution or tip for this?

It sounds like you may need to manually tweak the settings for your film to compensate for the color shift you are describing. Once you find settings that work you can save them and have them available for future use.

I'm a newbie to this topic so I don't know how to setup the color settings! isn't there a way to automaticlly get the settings? Nikon Scan could also get the settings automaticlly. Or is it perhaps possible to get the silverfast settings from the nikon scan software??

I am talking about you tweaking the settings to create your own Negafix profile based on what you see on your screen and in the lighting you have in the room where you use your computer.

But how to manually tweak this settings without calibrating my screen? Also I think I'm not good in adjusting colors manually. I only want to scan my old pictures in the best but also easiest way! Isn't there another way?

It really boils down to what looks good to you. Calibration would ensure technically correct color, but to coin a phrase, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

NegaFix and Nikon Scanners don't like each other (see below, taken from this Forum)

There are 2 solutions to your problem

(I) Use Nikon scan
(The mult-scan feature from SF only reduces noise from your scanner - which is very low - but not the dominant grain from your negativs!)

(II) Switch from Negafix to "Negative Direct" Mode (see below), it works with coolscan V! Calibrate your scanner with IT8 slide.

And don't waste your time with NegaFix, it creates horror-colors with Coolscan V.

I found a new option in the SilverFast general panel under "Pos./Neg." selection. What does this "Neg.:direct" option do?

a new scan mode in SilverFast(NikonM) Ai and SE software - SF ver. 5.5.2r15(Mac)/r20(Win).

Why did LaserSoft-Imaging add this new negative mode to SilverFast for Nikon film scanners ?
This mode should basically help all those users facing problems in the achievement of good quality scans from their negatives.

The common reasons for such problems are:
- film type is not supported by NegaFix.
- film type is supported but quality is not satisfying.

NegaFix quality may suffer, due to the indirect communication with the Nikon hardware. Therefore, LaserSoft-Imaging added this negative "direct" mode (Neg.:direct) for those cases where quality just don't meet the usual expectations.
In this mode SilverFast will NOT apply it's NegaFix data corrections and will instead rely on the Nikon Maid libraries for better negative analysis.

Limitations:
it is NOT possible to switch mode when working with images from a job queue in the SilverFast JobManager. You cannot change to positive or to the other negative mode. This means for negative Job-scanning that the desired negative mode (NegaFix or Neg.:direct) must be chosen BEFORE you start the SilverFast JobManager.

SilverFast default setting for negativ scans is: NegaFix.

when I'm trying to calibrate my Nikon scanner in negative direct mode I get the following error message:
Fehler: Einige Farbfelder zeigen zu starke Abweichung!

My english translation:
Error: Some Colorfields show strange deviation.
Please cancel and check framework position!

I've got the IT8 Dia E040712.


What I'm doing wrong?
