how can we identify HDR files?

I have several folders of scanned film tiff images on disk, most of them quite large because they were scanned at 4000dpi. I have forgotten though if they were scanned as 24-bit or as 48-bit HDR.
how can we tell if the file is an HDR file? (without using Photoshop)
regards
Gregory

Dear Gregory.
In SilverFast
HDR, if you can set the image mode to 16 bit color or gray, then the original file is in 16 bit. If the file is an 8 bit file, you can select 8 bit output formats only.
Best regards.

so the only way to tell if an image file is an HDR (ie, HiRepp) file rather than an ordinary tiff file is check its colour depth?

Dear Gregory,
note that you can check the bit depth of a TIFF file with the "view image information" command in the VLT.
