Installation for 64 bit Vista and 64 bit CS4

Postby jl » Fri Mar 27, 2009 4:21 am

I downloaded the Vista 64 demo version of Silverfast for an Epson 1640XL. It runs fine (hooray!) using the Silverfast launcher but was not installed as an import option for 64 bit Photoshop. Is this an installation problem or does the is the latest version support 64 Photoshop?

Dear Ji,

You need to do manually what SilverFast should have done itself automatically during the installation procedure:
Please create a shortcut to the SilverFast Photoshop plugin and put this in your Photoshop's Import-Export folder yourself.

Make sure you close SilverFast and Photoshop completely before following the next procedure.

The detailed description:

(1) Open your Windows Explorer
(2) Navigate to C:\Program files\SilverFast Application\
(3) Locate the Photoshop CS3 plug-in (a CS3 .8ba) file, probably in the sub folder "SilverFast (Scannername)"
(4) Create a shortcut to the plug-in there (you might want to rename it (drop the "Shortcut to" at the filename's beginning).
(4.a) A shortcut is created by right-clicking the file and drawing the mouse cursor (while keeping the right mouse button pressed) to an empty space in the Windows' Explorer right panel.
(4.b) When you now release the right mouse button, a context menu will pop-up, select "Create shortcut".
(5) Right-click on the newly created shortcut and select "cut".
(6) Change directories to C:\Program files\Adobe\Photoshop CS3\Plug-ins\Import-Export\
(7) Right-click on the empty space within that folder and select "paste" from the context menu.

This action should have created a shortcut in the import/export folder of Photoshop to the SilverFast Photoshop plug-in located in the SilverFast programme folder.

Restart Photoshop and check your File>Import plug-in list.

Thanks for the response. This should work fine with 32 bit Photoshop. 64 bit Photoshop uses different plugins and I'm pretty sure the 32 bit plugin won't be recognized by the 64 bit version. Adobe has documentation on the changes to 64 bit plugins in their SDK package. Also, I tried on my machine and the plugin does not show up in the import menu.

Is there a 64 bit plugin (meaning compatible with the Photoshop CS4 64 bit architecture) available?

Dear Ji,

At this time there are not 64 bits plugins compatible with the photoshop CS4 bit architecture available. In this case you have to start SilverFast from the Universal Launcher and open the pictures afterwards in photoshop.

We will have to study here this issue to determine the differences between both version of photoshop and see how quick we can come up with a solution.

Thank you very much for your cooperation and apologies to you and all our customers who are having similar issues for this inconvenience.

Please create 64 bit plugins as soon as possible. After waiting (literally) for years, it is disappointing to find the the 64 bit plugs are missing.

You can find more documentation on the plug-in architecture at www.adobe.com/devnet/photoshop/sdk/

Dear Ji,

Thanks for your information, as I already mentioned we will study this case first and then decide what comes next. SilverFast works based on the manufacturer driver and as you might know we had a hard time finding out the cause for the previous incompatibility issue with the operating system. After a lot of hard work and resources applied to it we could find a solution.

Anyway thanks for your cooperation, we will start doing research on this topic now. In the meantime I recommend you to use SilverFast with the standalone and edit your pictures later on Photoshop.

Again thanks for your cooperation and apologies for the inconvenience.
