When I install SilverFast AI v6.2.1r4 from my CD, I can view the Quicktime movies from the buttons throughout the SilverFast interface. However, when I install SilverFast AI v6.4.4r7 and the corresponding movies from the website, the movies appear momentarily and then crash with an error message that says "SIMPLEPLAYER MFC MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close".

From the details of the error message, it appears that the file QTPlayerSF.exe is crashing. Apparently SilverFast AI v6.2.1r4 did not use QTPlayerSF.exe to launch the Quicktime movies and accordingly does not have the problem. I have also tried the 6.5.1r1a demo, and corresponding movie installer, and experienced the same behavior.

I've had the same problem with both Quicktime 7.2 and 6.5.

Any idea what might be causing this issue and how I might remedy it?

UPDATE: I've resolved the problem.

It turns out that the current 160 series Forceware video drivers from Nvidia are the culprit. Since reverting back to the earlier 93.71 Forceware video drivers, the movies play fine.

While I could play Quicktime movies directly, I found that movies called through web browsers or other applications (such as SilverFast) always crashed.

Apparently disabling Direct Acceleration in QuickTime's advanced options can prevent the crashes, at the cost of video performance. I'll stick with the older drivers for the time being.
