Can' find scanner when using firewire

I have a customer trying to install a ScanMaker 9800XL on a brand new G5. Using the scanners USB-port everything works fine.
When using the scanners firewire-port the G5 can't find the scanner. He has tried both Silverfast (latest version 6.4.3r6b) and ScanWizard with the same result. In the MacOS the scanner shows up as Unknown.
He has now tried 2 different G5's and one Powerbook, all of them with MacOS 10.4.3, and all with the same problem.
Before we call it a hardware error; Any known problems with 10.4.3/9800XL/firewire? Oh yes, an external firewire harddrive works, even when connected after the scanner in the chain.
One of the first entries in the logfile says "ScanMaker IT8; LOCKED", but I don't know if this is realted to this problem.

Best regards

Dear Eric,
just I tested the ScanMaker 9800 XL on Mac G5 10.43 with FireWire and SilverFast 6.4.3r6b. The Scanner was found correct by the Apple System Profiler. Launching SilverFast via Photoshop CS or SilverFast Launcher runs correct and I could not find any problem. Afterwards I installed the original scan software : ScanWizzard Pro 7.52. Also with this software the scanner worked correct by using FireWire. Probably you will have a hardware problem. Please check the FireWire cable and the FireWire plugs of the scanner and the Mac.

kind regards

Christoph

Thank you for the quick response. We'll change the scanner's mainboard and see what happens.

I do also have sometimes trouble with Firewire, but with another scanner model and another OS (Win XP); however some suggestions from this experience (if your problem persists):
+ My scanner is not found on the firewire, if it was turned on before or at the same time as the computer.
+ The scanner is found, if I turn it on after the OS completed booting.
+ Sometimes, the scanner is dropped shortly after beeing detected; I have to turn it off and on again (sometimes more than once) to get the scanner detected.
+ The firewire connection remains stable after both the scanner and the OS completed initialisation.

Updating the scanner driver did not help; Silverfast is not yet loaded during these events; OS and scanner firmware are up-to-date.
