:(SF AI6 Incompatibile w/ Adaptec Host Adapter 29160N???????

Postby c4791p » Thu Apr 21, 2005 12:06 am

Since I last successfully used my SS4000, I have done two things. First I moved away from my old Adaptec AHA-2940AU because Adaptec didn't support it in newer Windows OS. I have installed a current version Adaptec AHA-29160N which Adapted shows as a migration path.

Windows really loves that particular adapter card. It starts cleanly and my Polacolor Insight Pro Ver 5.5.1 works quick and flawlessly.

And second I tried using Silverfast with the new 29160N card. Huge problems. I tried using the ver 5.5AI software bundled with my SS4000 (and upgraded from 5.0 to 5.5 to work with XP) and experienced multiple problems, so I fully uninstalled it (per directions elsewhere on this forum) and installed the trial version of AI 6 as a plug-in to Photoshop CS.

Now I am having really strange problems. The AI6 Polaroid entry shows up in the PhotoShop CS Acquire Image area, and I can select the SS4000 with no problem, but when I click to scan an image, the appropriate window opens showing that the SCSI card is being identified (takes about four seconds) and then there is a dead halt for 3 minutes or so, while the AI6 is attempting to scan the card and all it's attached devices and locate the SS4000. I have nothing else attached to the card!!!)

At the end AI6 (Polaroid), properly identifies the scanner and I can go ahead and work. But every time I attempt to acquire an image the same problem happens again.

The problem is this three minute delay.

When I use Insight Pro alone along with the new 29160N card, identification of the scanner card and the attached SS4000 takes 3 or 4 seconds at most in total and I can scan to my hearts content, quickly and smoothly.

Just for grins, I removed the 29160N and reinstalled the 2940AU in the same PCI slot. Using that 2940AU card (card not recommended or supported by Adaptec any longer-- supposedly it won't even work in XP) all my problems go away and the AI6 Trial works like a dream. With the 29160N card it works like a nightmare!!!

Can anyone give me some suggestions. Hopefully, there's some SCSI Card Bios tweak or installation step I am overlooking.

FYI; I have the latest version of the SF Trial Software (6.4.1r.4b) my Adaptec 29160N is flashed to its latest bios (3.10), the SS4000 firmware is 1.40 and I have used WinXP Pro for all my attempts.

Dear Chuck

for SilverFast actually the SCSI card used is transparent. It is an application level software which simply presume a functional SCSI communication on driver and operating system level (as other apps do).

Most problems concerning SilverFast and scanners under Windows 2000 and XP actually are derived from ASPI layer driver conflicts and can be resolved by correctly installing the right ASPI layer version for a given hardware / operating system combination.

Please check out if the 4.71.2 drivers (installation description: http://www.silverfast.com/faq/1002/en.html ) will help, or: if not, the 4.6 package will improve your situation.

Kind regards

:-? To finalize, all works well and I can spend some time evaluating AI6. I think, even though I moved my card to an entirely different PCI slot and dedicated an IRQ to it so now my scsi "mass storage controller" as Adaptec calls it sits in PCI slot 3 and has dedicated IRQ 5, I stumbled across the cause to my problem when I accidentally noticed my flat bed scanner (USB type) had been left on all the time I was fighting the setup of my scsi polaroid SS4000 film scanner.

Now I make a point of having only one scanner on at a time, and all is right with the world.

Thanks for your assistance.
