SilverFast + XP + Epson = Blue Screen

Postby gmoss » Sat Apr 02, 2005 6:16 pm

I am using Win XP Pro, the latest version of lasersoft silverfast driver silverfast SFE 6.4.1r4b for my Epson 4870. When I have the scanner on all works fine. But when I have the scanner off and start the driver I get a blue screen of death with the message IRQL_not_less_or_Equal. I have tried running in Windows safe mode and when I run the SF driver with the scanner off I get an error that it could not find the scanner. Since the scanner is turned off that is the message I would expect. Getting a Blue screen is not.

I checked out the following site:
http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread10747-1.html

I tried removing and reinstalling the silverfast driver, no luck. But when I uninstalled the silverfast driver and installed the earlier version 6.4.1r3 the problem went away. My wife has almost the same machine as mine and the latest driver works fine for her. I did update the ATI video driver on my machine a few weeks ago, but that seems to be going fine. Guess I will just stay r3 for now.

I suspect somewhere two drivers are not happy with each other. Has anyone had this issue or know what may be causing the problem?

Thanks

Gary

Dear gmoss,

SilverFast does not install drivers for the Epson Perfection 4870. Do you have the same problem when using the Epson scansoftware?

gmoss,

Do you have Windows XP with SP2 installed? If SP2 is installed are you using the MS Firewall? If the answer is yes to these questions try disabling the MS Firewall and see if that helps. If you are running some other Firewall software make sure it is not blocking SilverFast.

Hope this helps!

Hi:

Many thanks for the response. No I don't have any problems with the epson scan software. Yes I am using XP Pro with SP2 and all the updates. I do not run the firewall. One thing that was suggested to me that I have not tried was reinstalling the USB 2 durvers in Win XP. Also I have a small hub that has 4 connections. Only one is used with he scanner on it. This hub has inputs for 2 computers and a switch where we can have the scanner conected to either my wifes computer or mine, but only one at a time. Is there a chance that could be confussing the software (sorry I called it a driver). Since r3 does work and r4 does not like not finding the scanner is there anything different between the two that might cause this issue? Both seem to work fine when the scanner is connected.

Again many thanks for the response

Gary

To find out if the hub is a problem you could plug the scanner directly into a USB port on your computer. If it still fails something else is causing the problem.

If you think it is SilverFast, you can un-install the current version and install the previous one to see if that solves the problem. If it does you should inform LaserSoft right away.
