S....L....O....W preview window

Just installed SF AI6 on Windows 2000. Running the stand-alone application, I click on Prescan and wait a long, long, long time for the preview to appear. The greed "Ready" light keeps blinking. I must quit via the Task Manager.
Software was just uinstalled.
Scanner is Epson Expression 10000 XL. Connection is IEEE 1394.
Espons Scan software works fine, previews quickly, scans quickly.
