Uninstall before every update?

Greetings,
I like the new features included with the latest updates, thank you.
However, I had some problems with the installation of the latest updates (Ai Nikon 8000, Ai Microtek 9800XL, and HDR 6.2.1r9) that were only resolved by deleting the older version first (thanks to the hints by degrub, et. al.)
Is this normal? If so, does LSI recommend that previous versions (all SF related files?) always be uniinstalled first? I wouldn't mind except that if I completely delete all SiliverFast files, I have to go through the registration process again for each of the three versions - for every update.
FYI - an example of my problems was that HDR did not update the PS plug in folder, only the SF application folder. So if I started from PS, it ran the older version. If I went via the SF launcher, both versions were presenented as options. Deleting all SF files first worked fine.
Thanks and regards,
Harold
p.s. Before and after any update, I backup, rebuild permissions, and rebuild the directories with Diskwarrior, etc. Configuration: Mac OS 10.2.8, Photoshop 7.0.1, 1.5gb RAM. SF Ai Nikon 8000ED, SF Ai Microtek 9800XL, SF HDR).
