Mac OSX 10.2.6 Epson 3200 - Silverfast 6.0.2 won't install

I have just received an Epson 3200 scanner with Silverfast disk enclosed. I have installed the software into Photoshop 7 as directed. I am connected through USB.
When I try and launch Silverfast, it hangs with the message "There was no scanner found - check cables etc".
I have been through the knowledge base - "Classic" is not running, I have pre-loaded the Epson scanner software (and can scan using it), Apple system profiler is seeing the scanner on the USB bus. I have switched everything off and restarted the scanner and Mac.
I get the same problem trying to launch the stand alone app.
Any clues as to what to try next? Is it worth it?( as I'm getting pretty good results from the standard Epson software)
Thanks for any help.
