Driver-corruption after Installation of SilverFast SE (Demo)

Hello,
I am using a Microtek FilmScan 1800 via USB and TWAIN on a pc with Windows 98. I used to run my scanner via CyberView which was delivered with the scanner and wanted to try SilverFast SE as I heard from lot of Microtek-users that it is better than CyberView. Last Friday, July 18th I downloaded the demo-version of SilverFast SE ( I clicked thru Microtek -> FilmScan 1800
-> MSWindows -> Twain and then got the download, so I am rather sure that I chose the right software).
The installation on my PC went perfectly but after rebooting the pc the scanner could not be accessed any more by any photo-software from my PC, I always got the message that the TWAIN-interface did not work or the scanner was not plugged in/active. The scanner was active.
Then I found within the device-manager that the device "FilmScan 1800" was marked with a yellow "!" After double-clicking the device I got the message that the driver could not be loaded (error-code 2) and I should try to load a more actual one. But this did not help.
The worst was that uninstalling SilverFast and re-installing CyberView did not fix the corrupted TWAIN-driver anymore!
The only remedy was recovering Windows 98 completely!!
To be sure that the problem was connected to SilverFast I tried the installation once more and got the same driver-problem.
As I have a Windows-backup on tape the recovery is granted but nevertheless I am still interested to test SilverFast.
What could be done to get around this problem?
