Upgrade 6.0.1r44 for Epson 1680ExpressionPro won't accept SN

This weekend my computer crashed and I had to revert to a previous system restore point. I then upgraded to SilverFast Ai v6.0.1r44 for my Epson 1680 -- file "SFE-6.0.1r44(Expr1680).exe". The upgrade keeps rejecting my serial number. Normally of course, any incremental upgrade doesn't ask to re-enter the serial number, but I assume this happened because of the reversion to a past restore point.
It doesn't help that Lasersoft has created serial numbers with numerous O's and/or zeros. How the hell do I tell what's an O (letter), or the number 0 (zero)? Come on Lasersoft, we pay more than decent money for this product; why irritate your customers with these silly ambiguous serial numbers?
Now here's something interesting:
With the new r44 Epson 1680 installation, the main preview window states "Silverfast Epson CC-600PX" -- I would think this should state "Epson 1680 Epression". Has there been a mixup with "r44"? I then tried to re-install an older version "r36B", but "r44" stays put.
By the way, I had to go through the same scenario with my Nikon 8000ED Silverfast Ai install -- it worked fine and accepted my serial number! As expected, the main preview window here states "Silverfast FS-Nikon LS-8000" as it should.
OS: Windows XP Pro
