Unable to scan film

Postby tbusra » Tue Feb 03, 2015 3:48 pm

I have successfully installed Silverfast 8 SE and can use it to scan reflective (photos). However, when I want to scan film. I cannot change my source to other types of media. My menu still have only "Reflective". And I can't change "Positive" to "Negative" too.

I tried change the setting to "48-21 Bit". However, the source menu still keep at "Reflective" with no other choices to select.

Please help?

Thanks.

Dear Thongchai,

If you can not switch to transparency mode it is most likely due to the scanner losing the connection to the transparency unit in the lid.
Please check the cable at the back of the scanner which connects the transparency unit to the chassis of the scanner.
Switch off SilverFast and the scanner and then disconnect and reconnect the cable.
Then restart both.

In case the transparency mode is still not available please check if the manufacturer's software is able to use transparency mode.

Kind regards,

Recently I bought an Epson V800 and used the supplied software, I then installed Silverfast 8 SE from the disc also supplied by Epson. Both worked well with reflective and negative sources. I took the good offer to upgrade to Ai Studio.

However some days ago scanning failed with both applications, Reflective mode could not be changed to Negative. I spoke with Epson support about four times until told to the cable at the back to the scanner. It had worked itself slightly loose. The Epson software is now fine but Silverfast fails to produce a scan.

I am scanning medium and large format negs for an exhibition application.I am new to scanning.

The scanning seems to go well with the Workspace Pilot and the final preview thumbnail shown when scanning finishes looks fine. However the saved scan is very strange—a geometric mass of black and deep grey with sometimes faint signs of the scanned subject. I have made many frustrating efforts to overcome and understand the problem to no avail.

I also note the options offered by the Pilot, e.g. for setting resolution differ from those shown in your videos. An installation problem?

What is the problem and what is to be done? If I had not upgraded to Ai Studio I would sent the 8SE to Trash and use the disc again. I don't want to lose Ai Studio.

Can it be arranged arranged to download Ai Studio online after uninstalling what I have now? I online or telephone assistant available in or from Australia?

Your advice would be most welcome.

Kind regards,

Bill Lucas

Dear Mr Lucas,

What kind of film material are you scanning?
What you describe happens when you try to use infrared scratch and dust removal on a B&W film.
The silver halide emulsion blocks the infrared beam which causes the entire image to be recognized as a defect.
This can also happen with a few very dense color emulsions like certain Kodachrome variants.

Unfortunately we do not have an office in Australia.
If you have more questions I can offer to forward your request to our support system and contact you by e-mail.

Kind regards,
Arne Ketelhohn.
