The descreening function has become inconsistent in HDR. I have noticed that large lpi values (close to the scan resolution) will sometimes make the application hang. I am using the latest versions of Ai and HDR + photoshop 6 and windows XP. Help !

thx, Patrice

I'm not sure if this is related to my previous post, but descreening will change the scale% of the original image upon completion! For example
at 85 lpi -> 14.2%
at 133 lpi -> 22.2%
at 175 lpi -> 29.2%
I have to reset the main frame settings to return to my original 100% settings.

The descreen preview zoom is way off the mark displaying much more than was selected.

I have tried re-installing the software to no avail.

Patrice,

I don't think that altering the actual scan dimensions in HDR and then using descreen will work. In fact I'm not convinced that it's even a good idea. I tend to leave ALL scaling until I get into Photoshop and only then when ALL my editing work is finished.

So far as HDR hanging when processing descreened images I can confim that on my Mac G4 1gig ram and more swap file space than you could swing a stick at is also hanging

It would appear that once the scan/image resolution exceeds the descreen resolution then HDR hangs. This happens just before transferring the image to Photoshop. By way of example scan/image res = 4000 ppi (full optical of original scan), wih descreen of 3990ppi and big problem. 4000ppi scan/image with 4000ppi descreen no problem. Any scan/image res equal or less than the descreen res will work.

I ssume its either a bug or a complete misunderstanding of how descreen is supposed to work :sad:

Ian

Ian -

I have a dual powermac G4 with 1GB+ of RAM, but I do most of my scanning in WinXP. Thanks for the warning.

I also do all of my scaling in Photoshop. Unfortunately, attempting to descreen in HDR at any resolution consistently changed the scale factor? Strange...

It seems like small original scan resolutions perform better. I have less success descreening at equal or slightly less than the actual scan resolution when the ppi is very high. I bought a Polaroid SS4000 for high resolution scans, so this is very dissapointing.

This is obviously a big bug. Mr. president, when can we expect a fix?

Dear PKuame,
this behaviour (downscaling) is intended, because it ensures good scan quality. LaserSoft Imaging limited the scaling possiblility in combination with descreening calculations after quality was found to suffer when the software allows unlimited scaling while descreening calculation are applied on the same scan.
