SF launcher fatal error and dup pref directories and files

Good Morning,

After installing the latest version of HDR, I started having a fatal error when using SF Launcher. I uninstalled HDR and reinstalled the current version today. Now when I use the SF Launcher, shortly after seeing the VLT, I get a fatal error message and the program closes. I can open HDR in Photoshop as a plug-in and it works fine however. Also after the upgrade, my list of Jobs in Job manager are not listed with the Job / open command. I checked and the jobs are still filed in the Jobs sub-directory in Silverfast (PS Plugins etc)

After some investigating I've found that there are prf files in 2 locations. Prf files are located in both the Plugin/import export/Silverfast/prefs and Documents and Settings/Ken Levine/Application Data/Silverfast/Prefs. The Job Manager new saved files are also being placed in the Document and Settings/Silverfast sub-directory.

It appears that opening SF6 as a PS7 plugin places the job manager files in a different location than opening with SF launcher.

A little later:
I?ve copied the launcher exe and prf to the Documents and Settings /application data/ Silverfast sub directory and now the launcher works BUT doesn?t find the thumbnails from the job manager. Opening SF6 as a PS& plugin finds the job manager files

Perhaps you could tell me where the new HDR version is supposed to places files and how to synchronize how SF plugin and launcher, write and look for their files.

Are there registry entries directing Silverfast to place files in a specific location?

Ken Levine

P.S. I?m away from home for some months without my feature CD, so I?m hoping not to require it if I reinstall everything. Again your help is appreciated.

Looks like you got caught by a new "feature" that was requested to help organizations with multiple people using the same work station with different logons.

"Changes in Version 6.2.0r4: (11.02.2004)

* Improved thumbnail performance for all VLT versions.
* DC/DC Pro/HDR VLT:
o When switching from VLT to Silverfast back and forth the dpi setttings could not be selected--> fixed.
o Switching in Fullscreenpreview between Images in Album could lead to corrupted Preview. This dialog has been replaced with a blue progress bar and the preview works now.
* (PC) Threshold settings in Negafix can now be changed again.
* Now the allowed scan resolution is clamped in accordance with the descreening raster.
* (PC)SilverFast is made multi user aware - allowing a different set of prefs for every user.
* TIFF files written by SilverFast were not compatible to the File Info module of Photoshop CS (illegal document and artist name embedded)-> fixed.

thanks for the info. Where do you specify the file locations?

Best i can tell it defaults to your user account, just like you found it. Lasersoft better get a FAQ up pretty quick on this, especially if the plugin and launcher are working from different locations.

thanks again for the heads up... It would be helpful for one of the LAsersoft techs to clarify the file location specifier.

Dear Ken,

as Frank said, starting with version 6.2.0r4 the Windows version of SilverFast will save its preferences to "Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/LaserSoft Imaging/Silverfast", but it should do it regardless of the way it was started (by SF_Launcher or Photoshop). Are you sure that you start the same SilverFast version (6.2.0r4) from both SF_Launcher and Photoshop?

The new version 6.2.0r4 will look, if there are preferences at the new location. If not, but if there are preferences (including Jobs) at the old location, if will copy/move them to the new location, so this should work.

Try to move away the preferences from the new location and start the 6.2.0r4 again (with all your preferences including the Jobs at the old location). SilverFast should show a message box saying something like "Old preferences detected" and should do the work.

Regards
Ralf
