Microtek 1800f and SF 6Ai

I'm running an 1800f with sf 6 ai and ps cs. SF keeps hanging up on prescan or runs very slowly. I get a message that sf is not responding but then sometimes the prescan will appear a few seconds later. It seems like sf and the scanner are not in sinc. The one thing that always crashes sf is if I use the zoom buttion. I'm only running the one scanner and have downloaded the latest version of sf several times- 6.1.0r7. I've been able to complete a few scans successfully but the colors are way off and the scan process is very slow. I've dedicated plenty of ram and scratch disk per the faq's but it didn't help. I was able to calibrate with a transparency kodak target using sf but the color is worse than without it. Anybody have similar experiance or any ideas?
