Not sure I have the correct settings. 35 mm (technically 135 camera film) slides and negatives are 3.6 x 2.4 cm. I tried to change the settings by unlocking the link between width and height. Then change width to 3.6 mm. When I re-lock its goes back to 3.5 mm. What am I missing?

Also, I am scanning my 135 film slides and negatives at 3600 dpi with screen 2400 lpi. What should I change to produce 24 x 16 inch (61 x 41 cm) jpeg image at 300 dpi? Maybe 18 x 12 inch (46 x 30 cm) jpeg at 300 dpi would be better?

Well, that sort of enlargement is probably around the physical limits of your scanner. The easiest way to reach the maximum optical limit of your scanner would be to simply move the resolution slider completely to the right and return one step to the left.

A more complicated way would be to set the output value and then move the resolution slider to 300 dpi.

Thanks. My scans are about 5000 x 3300. I should be able to get about 16 x 11 inch (41 x 28 cm) prints.

But I am still confused by the settings: Original, Scale%, and Output.

It looks like I am getting the entire 3.6 x 2.4 cm frame. The film holder has six openings for negatives exactly 3.6 x 2.4 cm and that's what I see on the screen. But the scans don't have the correct aspect ratio: 3.6/2.4 = 1.500.

The aspect ratio I calculated for a couple scans: 1.472, 1.486, and 1.477. SiverFast's "Original" settings give me: 3.5/2.4 = 1.458. This indicates my scans are off by 1 mm width.

I tried unlocking and typing 3.6 in the "Original" field but SilverFast resets everything.

So what am I missing?

Once you resize the scan frame to fit your image it will loose the original aspect ratio. Remember that images do not have this exact aspect ratio, the important thing is to make the right framing of your motive.

For a more accurate framing I recommend zoomin in to have only that picture scanned in a slightly higher resolution, making the framing and corrections more accurate.

I should have been more clear in my original post. Here in the U.S. 35 mm film has frames that are 3.6 cm x 2.4 cm. The aspect ratio is 1.500 (exactly).





I understand that adjusting the scan frame will change that by a few pixels, but not by 3% as indicated by the pixel width x height I see in my scans.

How do I adjust SilverFast settings: Original, Scale%, and Output to scan 3.6 x 2.4 cm negatives without the 3% distortion?
