48 bits = 16 bits per channel x 3 channels (red, green and blue).

I do not really quite get your question. If you tell SilverFast to scan TIFF, your resulting file will be TIFF. Is that what your question means? or you want to know how can you specify the bit depth?

I meant, where within the tiff file will it say what the bits are? Is there a way outside of photoshop to tell once the scan has been created within some generic image opening software besides photoshop?

Perhaps you are using the scan mode 48->24 bits which means your resulting files will be 8 bits and not 16 bits.

What scan mode should I use within Silverfast besides that to give me 16 bits? There is no other choice. You said above that 48 bits = 16 bits per channel x 3 channels (red, green and blue). I do not understand what mode to use if I want 16 bits on this edition of Silverfast. Do I need an upgrade in order to get 16 bits?

I meant that to illustrate that another program is recognizing these scans as 8 bits instead of 16 bits, and I wanted to know why, and how to indicate within the Silverfast program that I want 16 bits, not 8 bits.
