Is it possible to save color settings made using Levels, Curves, GCC and SCC?
I have Silverfast SE for Canon 8800F.

Dear mintkate,

It is not possible to save your global color correction settings. It is possible to save color settings made using curves as well as selective color corrections.

These options are only available in SilverFast Ai and Ai Studio. You can download and test the demo version from: http://www.silverfast.com/get_demo/en.html

Cheers

so, if it is possible to save settings in Silverfast Ai, as i have, where are the settings saved on a mac?

i have on occasion spent MANY HOURS getting the colour just right for a particular shoot, by trial and error and opening the pics in Photoshop, then going back to Silverfast to tweak it a bit more

although this is VERY time consuming i prefer to not to have to adjust in Photoshop unnecessarily

the problem is when i have finished a day or two's work on that shoot i am aware that sometime in the future i may have to come back to scan more pics from that shoot, and i want to simply be able to click on, or choose from a list, my earlier saved setting, which seems eminently reasonable to me, since i know other apps allow me to do batch scanning in this exact way

however, altho i am quite familiar with my Mac's layout of folders and files, inc ~/Library/App Support or ~/Library/Preferences, i have NEVER been able to find out if, or where, SIlverfast supposedly saves the settings (and i assume it does because it has a SAVED dropdown in the apps menu, and you suggested it does this in your answer to the previous question)

so ............

where is the settings folder, how do i use old saved settings when i want to go back to a shoot years later????
and why is this so hidden from my view?????

You are very close, the folder you want to back up is called SilverFast and is saved at:

Mac/users/your user name/Library/Preferences/LaserSoft Imaging

i know preference files are normally associated with my preferences as to how the app is set up

not usually for filing different SAVED individual alternative settings

normally they are saved as individual NAMED (the name being chosen by myself) files within a special folder, assigned by the app

if you are right, it suggests why this does not seem to ever work, since i am not offered previously saved settings from different jobs (as many other apps allow me to do), so that i may chose that setting for the next job

are you sure you are right????????

Dear aaaashy,

aaaashy wrote:normally they are saved as individual NAMED (the name being chosen by myself) files within a special folder, assigned by the app

Not really, in SilverFast they are saved with the name you choose but written within the same prefs file.

You are offered previously saved settings as seen in the next two pictures (before and after saving your settings):

No, as I mentioned above this saved color settings are written within the prefs file

i have never saved a curve setting

i normally go thro loads of bits of Silverfast, tweaking this bit that way, and that bit this way

the singular setting would need to encompass ALL the tweaks i have made, which would include:-

exposure, contrast, colour balance (both the general alternatives like Portrait, or Gold, and my own selections made in whatever bit of Silverfast i use to get the look just so, etc etc

so, what i would HOPE to have saved within ONE setting for a particular shoot would be all of those little tweaks, and i would expect to find it in the same place as SAVE on the main panel

are you saying that within EACH bit of the app, there are SAVE elements?

rather than, say, a list of saved settings from the last 20 or so jobs, that i can choose from

or am i totally missing the point here?

i have always thought this one of the MAJOR weaknesses of this app, especially since i have been introduced to alternative and better methods of using and finding SAVED settings in programs such as Nikon Capture NX2, which offers me a list of them in the Menu dropdown, when i am about to do a batch process for example

I believe you are. As you can see in the original question of mintkate:

mintkate wrote:Is it possible to save color settings made using Levels, Curves, GCC and SCC?

Actually what you want to do with all your tweaks is to save your frame (under the settings menu/ frame panel) or the frame-set (under General panel/Frame-Set menü).

i do not think i read the first email wrongly since i have AiStudio, and your first reply infers that if i have this then i can save all (or what you call "global" settings) the settings

i have, of course, seen the two SAVE buttons, one in General, and one in Frame

however, i have no idea what these actually save, since, as i mentioned in the beginning of this conversation, that i cannot ever see how to find earlier saved versions

and i am now wondering, if these two SAVE buttons only save a series of the buttons that are adjacent to those SAVE buttons

which is partly what i have been wondering, and hoping that my conclusion was wrong (in that there is NO REAL SAVE FUNCTION IN THIS APP)

i have always thought of Silverfast as a very expensive app, especially since i have had to buy two separate copies for my two different model Epson scanners (i bought one, which i did not want to throw away, then upgraded and found i had to buy a different copy of your app, because your apps are tied to specific models of scanner) - in fact i have now spent more on the software than the scanners cost i think

and i find it inexplicable that this app does not seem to be able to save what are very complicated tweaks to get a particular transparency shoot from upto 25 years ago, looking just as i want it, and i find that EVERY shoot requires a different setting

what your lack of "global" save does, is force me into having to scan ALL the pics from a particular shoot at the same time, rather than do one because there is suddenly a demand for a photo, and then to go back to that shoot at a later date, when i have the time

i may be misunderstanding what you are showing me, and i hope sincerely i am, but if i do understand correctly, there is only partial save for a limited section of the app, and it would seem to be sections that i do not choose to use (i do not use curves because i cannot see an EXACT setting, it is always just a feel, and i like to know EXACTLY what i have done, technically, rather than JUST aesthetically

sorry i am going on about this, but it has upset me MANY TIMES over the past years, especially when i see it achieved so simply in other apps

yours sadly

Dear aaaaschy

Well actually the first question was whether it is possible to save color settings like curves or GCC or SCC using SilverFast SE or not.

My answer to the original question was:

It is possible to save "Curves" and "Selective Color Correction" settings only with SilverFast Ai or Ai Studio. I believe the user wanted to be able to load the same curve or Selective color correction he used before.

I believe you are making your own interpretation of my words:

aaaashy wrote:and your first reply infers that if i have this then i can save all (or what you call "global" settings) the settings

My original answer was:
LSI_Morales wrote:It is not possible to save your global color correction settings. It is possible to save color settings made using curves as well as selective color corrections.

As you can see I never said you can save all global settings, I clearly said "It is not possible to save your global color correction settings"

I believe your point goes beyond the original question (and its perfectly right, but confusing one topic with the other might be misleading).

I will now go over you questions:
aaaashy wrote:if these two SAVE buttons only save a series of the buttons that are adjacent to those SAVE buttons which is partly what i have been wondering, and hoping that my conclusion was wrong (in that there is NO REAL SAVE FUNCTION IN THIS APP)

Again the two save buttons, save the changes made only in those dialogues not global changes included outside the dialogues like in the frame panel.

There is a save function which is the one you find under the (frame panel/Settings menu)
If you use the Save feature described there you will find the saved parameters under the same menu with the name you have saved it. You can even use this saved settings as a standard SilverFast setting for all you pictures by going into the "options dialogue/general tab/default setting menu"

If you do not find your previously saved curves it might be because you have reset SilverFast preferences to its factory settings which deletes the entire file where your saved settings are.

Cheers
